Steve Prefontaine
Birth: 1951-01-25 Death: 1975-05-30

"The only good race pace is suicide pace, and today looks like a good day to die."

Runner Steve Prefontaine is still considered to be one of the greatest American runners in history. At one time he held the U.S. record for every long distance event and broke 19 national high school records in track. In college Prefontaine helped lead the University of Oregon to three NCAA Cross Country championships and four straight titles in the three-mile event. At the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Prefontaine barely missed out on a medal. Sadly, he was killed in a car accident at the age of 24. During his brief career he ran in 153 races and won 120 of them.
