A 13th century philosopher, writer and theologian, Meister Eckhart was one of the leading mystics of the Middle Ages. Eckhart joined the Dominicans at the age of 15, receiving his master's degree in 1302. He taught for a time and also served as a preacher in Cologne. His teaching centered on the union of the soul with God. He was condemned for heresy by Pope John XXII. Of all his surviving works, including sermons and tracts, "The Book of Divine Consolation" and "Talks of Instruction" are the most authentic, largely unedited by his foes later on.
