Robert Frost

A four-time Pulitzer Prize winning poet, teacher and lecturer, Robert Frost is one of America's most beloved poet. His poems include "The Road Not Taken", "Home Burial" and "Mending Wall". Unlike many writers, Frost never held any traditional jobs, spending his entire life as a poet. He was well respected in his own time, even being asked to read "The Gift Outright" during President John F. Kennedy's inauguration. Frost was considered the unofficial poet laureate of the United States at the time of his death in 1963 at the age of 88. His gravestone in the Old Bennington Cemetery near Shaftsbury, Vermont reads: "I had a lover's quarrel with the world".

Published in Frost's Mountain Interval, the poem this quote is taken from is often used to show that the "road less traveled" can mean important things for the traveler. However, the poet admits earlier in the poem that the roads "Had worn them really about the same," and that the choice to take the road less traveled was one of future recollection, but of no less import.
