Information about Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Known as the "Sage of Concord" for his stirring oratories, Ralph Waldo Emerson came from a long line of ministers, including his father, who was a seven generation clergyman. Following the death of his two brothers and his young wife, Emerson began to doubt his own faith, renouncing his ministry. Instead, he spend much of the rest of his life writing, thinking and speaking. He is the founder of the school of thought known as Transcendentalism, which relied on intuition over scientific reason and the belief that the world held spiritual truths. During his lifetime, Emerson became one of the most respected and revered men in the United States who wrote tirelessly about power, freedom, the power of the self and social issues.
