A master of the English language, James Joyce is one of the 20th century's most well-known and highly respected writers. Educated in Ireland, James collection of short stories, "Dubliners," was suppressed initially due to its tropical references. His first novel, "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," was published in 1916. "Ulysses" followed in 1921, but did not appear until 1933 in the U.S. due to charges that it was obscene. Finnegan's Wake was published in 1939. Joyce died in 1941 but his work greatly affected other writers, including Salman Rushdie and John Updike.
