Killed by an assassin's bullet just a thousand days into office, President John F. Kennedy was the country's youngest elected president. Born in Massachusetts, Kennedy became a war hero when his PT boat, PT-109 was rammed. Even with grave injuries, he led survivors to safety. While recuperating from an operation, he wrote "Profiles in Courage", which won him the Pulitzer. His call to action led America to land a man on the moon before the decade was out and his programs launched the country on its longest sustained period of expansion since the world war. On the international front, he blocked Soviet expansion by demanding the removal of missiles from Cuba, which brought the world perilously close to nuclear war.
