Her photos were square black-and-white pictures taken of "deviant and marginal people," such as transvestites, dwarfs, giants, prostitutes, and circus performers. A year after her suicide in 1971, Arbus became the first American to have her photography shown in the contemporary art exhibition Venice Biennale.
