survival is about existing, not living. We can't live without friendship but we can survive. The only things one needs to survive would be food, water and shelter. However it is music, art, poetry, love and frienship that makes our existence worthwhile. That's the point.

Perhaps if you studied what happens to some people, after their loved ones died, you might see it differently. Peridocially, some people, who have had loved ones die, will pass away, shortly thereafter. The value of having lost a close friend, for some, can result in a genuine devastation, similar to the loss of a loved one. A close friend can, indeed, often be a person, regarded as a loved one. Only, theoretically, is Lewis correct. But sometimes, in application, he is quite wrong. That's the point.

I agree with your comment on when someone so very close to us, and they may not be romantic, simply an extremely close friend can cause devastation. And even in some cases after a loss so great it can lead to passing away from the trauma, but this is rare. Which is where you contradict yourself too, it is only sometimes, this is meant in general terms. If we never have such a powerful friendship as what you describe we can live without it. What you describe is so rare, to actually cease living from the loss, it's tragic but that's not the point. C.S Lewis is trying to show friendship as one of the only things that makes life important, that makes it worthwhile. We are purely talking theory, if you consider any of these quotes or schools or thought, not many have application in the real world. Perhaps you should invest in a few entry level english classes, dealing first with basic grammar, and then with comprehension. I have never seen such brutal abuse of the comma before. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the comments on these quotes shed light upon the author, the circumstances the quotes were written under, the context they were written in, or even included inspired, intellectual insights?
