The fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso was recognized to be the reincarnation of his predecessor when he was just two years old. Following a vision, high lamas spread throughout Tibet to search for him. After passing a series of tests, Gyatso was enthroned in 1940. At 16 he assumed full power of Tibet when the Chinese invaded the country. He has been in exile since 1959, living in the Himalayan foothills in India.
