Front man for the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia was its lead guitarist and songwriter. Born in 1942, Garcia was the son of a popular bandleader in San Francisco. He formed his band in 1965. Closely connected with the hippie movement and drug culture, the band started out playing psychedelic rock but then branched out into other styles.
