It is possible to use car audio equipment in your boat. Many people get long life out of stereos made for automobiles. However, if you don't plan on exercising a lot of care and maintenance, you will definitely want to consider waterproof speakers and marine stereo gear. Water, salt and rough waves can all take their toll on electronics. Our marine stereos and waterproof speakers are designed to thrive in a tough environment. Shock resistance for a stereo in a marine environment is also extremely important. Every hard hitting wave can damage sensitive electronic equipment, but our products are built to handle the vibration of a bumpy boat ride.

If you purchase one of our marine stereos that is not completely waterproof, we recommend using a splash cover. They are inexpensive and easy to install. You may also want to consider an enclosure. It offers an easy mounting method while protecting the reciever from moisture. All of our stereos use some type of plasticote over the circuitry to protect it against moisture and corrosion. Some even have completely waterproof faces with sealed controls that won't let water in.

There is no substitute for a quality speaker in a wet environment and we have a great selection from which to choose. All are corrosion and water resistant with waterproof components while some are completely sealed and waterproof for your peace of mind. None of them have paper cones and all of the circuitry is protected.

Splash covers and enclosures offer an opportunity to protect your receiver from the environment. Suppose you are hosing down your boat and water splashes over your system. A good splash cover can make all the difference. On the other hand, if you don't like the idea of having to flip a splash door up and down, you might want to consider a marine unit with a completely sealed faceplate. The faceplates on these stereos use molded rubber buttons and gaskets to seal out any moisture. You can still have problems if the faceplate is down, but hopefully you are smart enough not to hose down your boat with the CD door open. Understand that a waterproof faceplate does not mean that the back of your stereo is immune to water as well. That is why it is important to properly install it in your dash, so that water cannot get around the edges. If you don't want to put it in a dash, an enclosure is an even better option. A good enclosure will protect stereos from splashes and the weather while allowing it ventilation so bad things don't happen.

Marine Technology is amazing and while technology improves, so does the amount of electronics on the water. Just a few years ago no one had ever heard of MP3 players. Now you can compress all of your favorite tunes into MP3 format and burn them on a CD. With this method a CD can hold 5 times more music than otherwise. That is a great advantage on the water where you may not want to spend a lot of time changing CDs. You can cruise for miles without having to make any changes to your settings.

There are several types of marine remote controls for these types of electronics. Some prefer a wireless waterproof type of remote that can float. Great for playing in the water and making changes to your settings from a short distance. The only difficulty is that most of these are line of site type remotes like the remote on a TV. Wired remotes are usually installed in parts of the boat away from the stereo so that changes can easily be made. Most of these are not waterproof although some are.

Considerations about speakers that you need to make other than the fact that waterproof speakers are an absolute must in almost any small boat include selecting from the two basic types of speakers. Flush Mount Speakers can be installed in tight spaces and out of the way of most activity. However, you also have to cut a hole in your boat to get them in place. Flush mount speakers must have adequate air space around the cone when they are mounted in order to get the best frequency response. Also, you don't want any other open air path behind the speaker. Both of these conditions could result in a serious loss of bass response.

Box Speakers don't require you to cut a hole in your boat and the box enclosure is already set for optimum performance of the speaker so you don't have to worry about the air space around it. The only real disadvantage is that they can take up space on your boat that flush mount speakers don't.

So you can install car stereo equipment on your boat and continually replace it or invest a little more and get a lasting system with the proper protected marine electronics.
