On His 56th Birthday: Steve Jobs Quotes

Posted February 24, 2012 by Steve Jobs
Not too long ago, I was cruising through an office supply store when I noticed among the 2012 calendars a version memorializing Steve Jobs quotes - a different picture of Jobs and a quote for every month. "Wow," I thought "this is really carrying things a bit too far." The media covered his passing similar to other royalty before him, such as Princess Di and Elvis (well, he was The King, right?). I didn't buy the calendar that day, or the book on Steve Jobs' life, or download it onto the iPad that I don't own. But since 99% of us have been affected by his life's work, reflecting on the man behind his multi-billion dollar industry is definitely worth another look, in honor of his 56th birthday this weekend.

The world is always fascinated by the incredibly successful, for good reason - we admire those who truly live their dream. Steve Jobs quotes are sought after for their focused perspective, creative energy and unparalleled ingenuity. When the pioneering visionary behind Apple and former CEO of Pixar Studios died last fall after a well-publicized battle with cancer, the world mourned the passing of one who undeniably "walked the walk and talked the talk." His motto: "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become," is one of the most inspirational of all Steve Jobs quotes.
Reed College's most famous dropout was a student on the campus for just one quarter. The creative genius had his sights set on tackling the emerging computer world, and from a meager beginning in the garage of his parent's home, Steve Jobs never looked back. His expectation that passion in life is mandatory and that mediocrity was unthinkable was the basis of the formation of his first company, Apple, formed in the mid-1970s. His business savvy and unmatched drive to succeed is reflected in one of the most telling Steve Jobs quotes about success in life, "I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what's next."
Steve Jobs quotes are not just about success. Many reflect hard lessons learned from his falling out with the board members at Apple and eventual return to power. He noted, "I'm the only person I know that's lost a quarter of a billion dollars in one year.... It's very character-building." He never compromised his principles and was dedicated to continuing to invent new and better ways to communicate on a global basis.
"Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me ... Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful... that's what matters to me." This Steve Jobs quote from 1993 was a self-fulfilling prophesy, as he achieved immense wealth and changed technology forever. Part of his legacy is the inspiration he passed on through his lectures and his only commencement speech. One of Steve Jobs quotes that summarizes his philosophy best is, "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle."
These are good words to live by. The legacy of Steve Jobs lives on in our home, probably as it does in yours, every time we see a Pixar movie, or listen to the iTunes we download onto our iPods.
And though we don't own every gadget that he helped develop (much to the chagrin of my teenage children), I think back to the dark days of DOS and know that our lives would be much different today if were not for his tireless work. For his innovative spirit, remarkable vision and focus on simplicity has brought us a world of products we didn't know we needed, but now, can't live without.
