Inspirational Quotes for a New Year!

Theoretically, the holiday season should be treasured as being one of the most inspirational times of the year. If you are Christian, it could be the highly anticipated miracle of the birth of Christ. Another religious tradition, that of the mystery of the Menorah oil, is celebrated by people of Jewish faith for 12 days in December. These sacred ceremonies are filled with reverent and inspirational contemplations. Those in the secular world may be comforted by one of the simplest inspiration quotes from actress, fashion icon and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn, who offered, "Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'."
Inspiration is also sorely needed as we ready ourselves for the long list of resolutions we all seem to make for the New Year. Who doesn't need inspiration to stick with a goal to lose weight, or stop smoking, or get your marriage back on track? As we prepare to lift our glass and sing Auld Lang Syne, we look for advice from those who have passed before us and realize that some of the most inspirational quotes came from the amazing intellect of the highly successful visionary and Apple founder, Steve Jobs. Widely recognized for his insightful advice on both business and life, he counseled, "Your time is limited, don't waste it living someone else's life... and most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
Henry Ford, another incredibly successful entrepreneur and father of the automobile, offered this inspirational quote, "There isn't a person anywhere who isn't capable of doing more than he thinks he can." Try using this mantra as you are trying to convince yourself that the treadmill at the local gym really is your new best friend, or that finally, this is going to be the year to ditch that dead-end job.
Perhaps your goal for 2012 is less measurable but more meaningful; in other words, you want to make the world a better place, or be a kinder, gentler person. Inspiration from world leader and peacemaker Mahatma Gandhi may help you focus your meditations, as we remember one of his famous quotes, "We must become the change we want to see."
The famous lecturer Ralph Waldo Emerson was no stranger to inspirational quotes, having given 1,500 speeches on the subject in his lifetime as he spread the practice of Transcendentalism. One of his most memorable was the observation, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."
By this time, it may occur to you that these motivational icons all have the same message in common: that the inspiration we look for outwardly must first come from within. This could be a difficult proposition for the struggling individual who views their goal as one would observe Mt. Everest: incredibly intimidating at worst, and at best, an uphill climb. This would be an excellent time to pause, take a deep breath, and recall an inspirational quote by American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."
Inspirational quotes are something we need to reflect on every day in 2012 to effect the change we desire. Realists may offer that perhaps it is best not to look too far down the path and just live the best you can in the present. Again, as explained by the great Audrey Hepburn, "Pick the day. Enjoy it - to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come... The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present - and I don't want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future."
